Had some serious knocking going on with my alpha one mercrusier. I pinpointed it to were the drive shaft was going into the rear unit. Pulled the six nuts and the two on the power trim cylinders. Seperated the drive shaft housing from the bell housing. Inside the main cavity was alot of the baby poop looking stuff. It didnt look like oil but kinda looked like sludge. I guess my question is, 1st is that normal for that area to be full of fluid, should i replace all seals around there? 2nd What am i looking at with the baby poop looking stuff? No water is visible, and i tried to upload a photo but it didnt work. I will keep trying.

I want to get the knocking taken care of and enjoy the last little bit of time before summer is over. Please advise. Thanks for everything too guys, your a lifesaver (not to mention money too).

That reseal, is a new bellows that leaked water, the knocking is from the ujoints that have water in them (makes a poor lubricant) your gimbal bearing is also due to be replaced. Also check your outdrive gear lube, it is probably milky as water get in and pushes oil out into the bellows. Part of that mixture you have in there. The water probably leaks back out when you pull the boat out of the water.

Thanks for the advice guys. Any recommendations on where to pick up the new stuff? I did some shopping online and there are a lot of variations of the gaskets, seals, etc.

How hard is it to replace the gimble joint? Do i attempt with my cylmer manual or take it to the one boat guy we have in town? I am semi mechanical (always worked on all of my own trucks for service and parts replacement) but the boat is kinda different.

Also do i need to look at replacing the ujoints? they seem ok but once again not sure completely.

thanks again, you guys rock
