What is "back mount" steering cable? I'm about to replace my rack-n-pinion steering cable, and some are identified as back mount, and others are just rack and pinion steering cables. Any difference?

Thanks. I'm submitting another post about lubricating my rack-n-pinion cable.

Here's a pic of mine. Pretty sure it says "Back Mount" on it. The rack/cable attaches from the top. I replaced my cable a few years ago.

Since you just replaced yours, any suggestions for me if I replace mine?

Not an easy job. Did mine over the winter so if I screwed it up I had time to punt. Depends on how the cable is supported around the gunnel. Mine was cable tied in with a lot of other wiring, control cables, etc. In other words I saw no way the large nut on the steering cable would pull through. So I sawed it in two with a hack saw at the rear near the nut. Man that's some tough steel! Took me awhile. Then the loose end running to the helm pulled through easily. Then you can remove the nut end easily also. When installing the new cable I used new hangers in places where I could reach. I did this by myself so I had to go slow and feed it through a few inches at a time. I used a shotgun cleaning kit to remove old grease, etc. from the tube where the new cable goes. Mine was 16 years old and showing it's age. Glad it did it. What a difference.

My only screw up was that I should have taken pics of how the helm end routed through the maze of wiring under the steering wheel area first. So once I got it all routed around and hooked up at the transom end I found out it's placement in the front end wasn't going to work. It was putting too much pressure on wires once attached to the steering wheel shaft. So I had to undo the transom end and re-feed it back to the helm the correct way. Hope this helps.

Yes. That helps. Taking a photo under the helm sounds like a good idea. Thank you. I plan to cut away all the cable ties under the gunnel and the helm, then once the new steering cable is in place, put on new cable ties to the wires. I'd like to find a way to securely attach the steering cable under the gunnel.
