backfire

i have a 1989 british seagull not pumping water to good so i took the head off to clean the water passages got them all nice and clean everything back together first pull on the rope a back fire next ten pulls nothing getting a bright blue spark and the spark plug is wet before i stripped the head she would start 1st 2nd pull

Did you replace the head gasket?
what compression has it got?

Check the timing. Sounds like the mag is way out of synch.
