after recently purchasing an old 86 50hp 3 cyl. in need of repair. I have found the water pump impeller in pieces and the housing destroyed, thats an easy fix. my question is when pulling the lower housing I did pull some rubber out of the lower end of the water pipe that goes up to the engine and am concerned that more may have made it's way up to the engine. can it be backflushed or should I not worry about it?

You can remove the thermostat and blast the garden hose in it with the lower unit off.

I'm fairly sure and 86 doesn't have a thermostat but could be wrong, I don't see one anywhere?

They all have a thermostat. Just some are smaller and harder to find.
