:D:D I did that once; made for an interesting day at the lake!
As I recall, I was able to re-mount the control box to the opposite side of the steering rack to solve the problem. Can you do the same?

If you are looking at the engine from the helm, when turning the wheel right the front of the motor is supposed to point left -- that makes the prop push the rear of the boat left and the bow goes right as God intended. If you have the boat in the water and the boat actually goes left when you turn right, then you stuck the cable in the wrong port on the helm.

Re: Backward steering...what the........

when i ran the cable to the helm i installed the end into the only hole intended, there is a clear in & out...i thought the same thing, so the only thing i was wondering is if there is such a thing as a "left" and "right" configuration for outboards...as the threaded part of the trim/tilt tube will determine steering response, or do all outboards have the threads to the st'bd side?

Crazy! Do you have the drag link hooked up correctly.

isnt it though? yea, everything is hooked up correctly, only thing i can think to do is buy a longer steering cable...switch the T/T tube so the threads are to port side and i think that will work???????

Open to all suggestions & comments

A steering cable cannot stand that short of bend radius so you cannot have the helm on the right and run the cable into the left side of the engine. Post a picture of the helm you installed. There is only one explanation and that is the cable is incorrectly installed. A cable that enters the helm at the bottom will PULL the cable when the wheel is turned right. That will cause the boat to turn left. If installed at the top, the cable is PUSHED when turned right and the boat will turn right. Look at the helm again and think about turning it 180 degrees. You will quickly see what you did wrong..

Re: Backward steering...what the........

A friends Sangstercraft had a seized steering cable and he replaced it, Called me shortly after and said he figured he bought the wrong one.
I went over and had a look.
It had a reversible box that the steering column went into under the dash.
I pulled it out and switched it around and it solved the problem.
I came home and did some research on his part and it was incase the boat had port side controls, But they are suposed to come from the factory set up for Starboard controls.

I guess someone in the factory "Had A bad case of the mondays".

Could be your problem??

Silvertip, that's exactly what i thought..so looking at the Teleflex steering control box, there's only one way to thread the cable, only one side has a threaded male end..the "out" side is a female threaded,so there's no way to attach the nut to the "wrong" end of the box,....here's the unit i have - http://www.foreandaftmarine.com/1-SH5094P.htm

see what i mean???

Upside down, turned 180 degs, etc. none of that will work. If it's pulling when it should be pushing then thats it's going to be backwards. However, some of these units can be made to work either way. If you can take off the back,(some you can and some are sealed), you might find that the reduction gears can be moved to a different location which will cause it to reverse the current push/pull.

Maybe that's it, maybe not. Maybe its just the wrong unit and you need to get it replaced.

Yea,thats what im thinking. I was looking at this - http://www.foreandaftmarine.com/1-SH5094P.htm it looks like the spool-in is interchangable,so by inserting the cable in the top will give me correct steering?

MikDee, know what?? the part you linked ..was the one i intended to link...evidently i still had the former on "paste" but yea i think your unit will allow me to run the cable thru the top...giving me the correct steering...is it interchangeable..as far as top or bottom cable "IN" attachment???

MD, OHHHHH s#*t, i used the quick link, screwed it into the male threaded end,and didn't even realize the outflow tube was female threaded.......:D
