What are my options? I really like the motor, but is it worth fixing? How much should it cost?
I can't do it myself

It depends on the extent of the damage, but most shops want approx $2000 for a rebuild these days.
Parts are available for that motor.
Both from the factory (Mercury) and from aftermarket sources.

How bad is the damage and what caused it?

They didn't tell me the extent of the damage or the reason, but they told me $3,000 to repair it. I guess it's time for a new one.
