Bad # 5 in 87 evinrude 200 looper

Hi,<br />I bought motor with #5 bad. Bored #5 and replaced piston and rings.Ran for 30 min.before #5 went bad again.Sleeved #5 and installed new piston and rings.Also went through carb. and swapped #5 with #1 carb. and swapped heads from port to starboard.<br />I ran motor for 15 min. and rechecked compression had dropped 30 lbs.Inspection of cylinder shows that scoring has already started and the cylinder appears dryer than the others.The carb bowl is getting fuel.I need help on this one.What can I check for?

First make sure you have the correct flywheel. You must use one from a 1986 or 87 V6 looper. Your dealer will have a chart that explains where the timing "breaks" are on the center hub magnet.<br /><br />If you have the correct flywheel, make sure the center hub magnet has not moved and is still in the correct location.<br /><br />If thats OK degree the flywheel and paying close attention to #5, run the motor and see if we dont have a double firing or a shadow firing situation. Dont worry about replacing the piston just yet as long as the motor still runs you can check it, repair the cause and then change the piston. <br /><br />Since it happens while the motor is ideling it shouldnt be too hard to find.<br /><br />Good luck!

Thanks,<br />this sounds like really good advice because there were some loose magnets on the flywheel and I had them reglued at a boat repair shop. He simply spaced them equal distance around the flywheel. This may have been a mistake on his part. I will check the timing of each cylinder.

Thats the outside magnets. We're talking about the center hub magnet.<br /><br />Go thru, in order, the suggestions. Whatever is wrong will be very obvious.<br /><br />Keep us posted!
