Re: Bad, bad NASCAR boys

Kenseth and Kahne got busted for illegal holes in the wheel wells that would improve the aerodynamics of their cars.

What do you say, Gary? What is the inside scoop? Sounds like these 2 will have to qualify from the back of the pack of the 150 mile qualifier.

I read that Mikey's car was impounded last evening.

EDIT: Here's the news.

From Jayski.com:
Kenseth, Kahne times disallowed; Waltrip's car impounded: #9-Kasey Kahne and #17-Matt Kenseth qualifying times/speeds been disallowed, both will start at the end of the 2nd Gatorade Duel race. The #17 and #9 cars were found to have illegal aerodynamic devices/enhancements. NASCAR's Jim Hunter said both infraction is considered as serious as the one that caused #48-Johnson's crew chief to be suspended after Daytona 500 qualifying last year. While the crew chiefs have not been suspended, NASCAR has not rules out anything, penalties are forthcoming. Also, the #55 Toyota was impounded by NASCAR and Hunter said the car would be inspected 'with a fine tooth comb'. Both Kahne and Kahne will be allowed to start their respective Duel 150's from the rear. No word on what will happen with Waltrip and the #55 team.(PRN's Garage Pass Radio Show),

Yeah, i just read that on NASCAR's site about Mikey's car. I thought the Toyota cars would have either run well or sucked.....they sure didnt put make the showing to match all the hype thats been going around.

In listening to the tv yesterday during qualifying Toyota is only the second foreign car maker to start a Cup event.....does anyone know the who the other maker was and when....I remember who the maker was but can,t remember when it was.

Guess all these gray hairs are starting to take affect.

Sanctions on the teams are to be announced today or tomorrow.

I guess they found some foriegn substance in Wlatrip's manifold. Made him replace it for qualifying and that is why they impounded it and are going over it with a fine tooth comb. Hmmm ... could be an interesting year ... the cheating is starting early and often ... or should I say they are catching the cheating early and often

Those guys are searching constantly for an edge that hasn't been outlawed. . . .yet.

NASCAR has decided that anything that is not spelled out as allowed is illegal. That's why they are still using 1950s engine technology and 21st century aerodynamics.

And this is also part of the reason NASCAR cars are $85K a copy and not $1M. Not all technological advances are good for all circuits . . . ;)

On this type of infraction they should also lose their provisional starting status . . .

Re: Bad, bad NASCAR boys

After having watched many minutes of the Speed netwoks crew on Sat. afternoon expond on what a fine thing that Toyota was for Nascar and how well they would fit in, what great drivers and team member they had and how honest and above board the company and their people were. Their main spokesman and his team get the car impounded before the first race of the year, that really seaks well for them and their team members, I sure the team did not get that manifold by mistake from the kid at Auto Zone or NAPA:8) they may fit better than I thought--Bob

I don't know if this is the correct answer or not but Mercedes Benz in the early '80's made a bid to race in NASCAR.
Their 500SEC "Hammer" was put forward.
They withdrew the request when they were informed they would have to redesign the entire car using 50 year old technology.

Given the path most sports have taken (down the path of graft, corruption, and payoffs, that is the ONLY reason I still follow NASCAR... The field do not cheat and get away with it. NOW, if the officials could only do something about the rampant dirty driving bump-n-runnin and pit-blocking.

There are no more "provisional" positions, other than the Past Champions Provisional. The top 35 in points are guaranteed a start, the rest qualify in on time.

Mikey does not meet either, so he must qualify in or go home.
Dale Jarrett qualifies for the PCP if he is not in the top 15 in the 125 on Thursday. At this time his car is not in question.

Re: Bad, bad NASCAR boys

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 13, 2007) – NASCAR announced Tuesday that four NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series crew chiefs have been suspended from competition, starting with Sunday’s season-opening Daytona 500.

Two of the four – Ken Francis, crew chief for the No. 9 Dodge driven by Kasey Kahne; and Robbie Reiser, crew chief for the No. 17 Ford of Matt Kenseth – have been suspended for four races and fined $50,000. Also, Kahne and Kenseth were penalized with the loss of 50 driver championship points while their car owners, Ray Evernham and Jack Roush, were penalized 50 car owner championship points.

The violations by the No. 9 and No. 17 teams were found during post-qualifying inspection on Feb. 11. Both teams’ qualifying times were disallowed.

Two others – Rodney Childers, crew chief for the No. 10 Dodge driven by Scott Riggs; and Josh Browne, crew chief for the No. 19 Dodge driven by Elliott Sadler – have been suspended for two races and fined $25,000. In addition, Riggs and Sadler were penalized 25 driver championship points while their car owners, James Rocco and Evernham, were penalized 25 car owner championship points.

The violations by the No. 10 and No. 19 teams were found prior to qualifying.

In each instance the violations were of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing), 12-4-Q (car, car parts components and/or equipment not conforming to NASCAR rules) and 20-2.1E (unapproved aerodynamic modification) of the series rule book.

Mikey's deal still up in the air.

I flippin' know . . . I was sure somebody would call me on that, but thought that "they should lose their top 35 in points free pass, provisional, franchise thingee deal" sounded funky . . . := I still think they should lose their top 35 guarantee, but of course that's cuz' my boy is outside lookin' in and has to race his way in on Thursday :% And the flipped up rumor a few months back was that he would get a Yates ride :|

BTW, 50 points and four races is pretty dern stiff . . . deserved, but stiff.
