yeah- facing ball gear it should turn clockwise - resistance of water pump impeller will make it drag- it won't "spin", but should turn by hand with some resistance
could be a bearing in the intermediate - start draining compartments and see if any give you silver oil
but whatever it is, is making the engine stall at idle, bad bearing in outdrive??? should i be able to spin the input shaft by hand? doesn't seem loose?
