Can a bad CDI unit effect performance? Last season boat ran perfect. Was out yesterday with it and ran awful (sputtering) at a higher rpm and then battery wouldn't turn motor over. Gas is fresh and carbs are clean. Started looking at motor and noticed the CDI unit is melted so I need to get one anyways. These things are pricey...would anyone know where I can get at the best cost? Part # is 804269T2. Thanks.

If the starter will not turn it over you need to do a few checks !----Get the battery load tested.----Do a compression test.----Inspect the starter.----Is the oil injection in service and working properly ?----When did you last replace the water pump impeller ?

Everything you listed is fine or has been replaced. I'm just curious if my melted CDI unit is the culprit with the performance issue and if so, the best place to get one. Seems like ebay has the best price but thought I'd ask if there's somewhere cheaper.
Thanks.

The CDI isn't supposed to be melted! That's your first clue that you have a problem. Numerous changes have been made to that CDI over the years from date of engine mfgr.....like my 2002. I have had several go bad on me in the 12 years I had my boat and each replacement had a higher numbered series part number....indicating a revised edition.

My test for spark is a battery powered timing light. I hook the sense clip on each cylinder at whatever rpm I chose to run and look for consistency in the readings...all 3 should be blinking with the same intensity at the same rate for a given rpm.

The melted CDI is not a "battery won't turn the motor over" root cause unless by some hook or crook, whatever it was that melted the CDI didn't pop your safety fuse but was enough current draw to discharge your battery.....otherwise no relationship between the two problems.

I would shoot a question off to Mercury Marine and ask the current part number for that engine and get one of those....even if they are pricy.....sometimes the most frugal purchase cost you the most money initially. They sell them on here. On running without that cylinder, you only have 3 and that's 33.33% of your total not counting the loading on the other two caused by having to drag around a non responsive 3rd cylinder.

OK, Thanks....I'll get the serial # and get the correct part. A 25 amp fuse did blow a few weeks ago not allowing it to start or use the trim (everything else was ok) and I replaced it which corrected problem but may have blown due to bad CDI.

Are you also saying a bad CDI also has nothing due to performance and that it's more likely a timing / cylinder issue? Thanks for the info.
