I got my 87 glasstron back in the water today after having the transom rebuilt and it leaked. It looks like it might be coming in around the exhaust coupling behind the engine. I didn't replace the gasket there ... does that usually need replacing after removal? Also, as the title suggest... what does a bad coupler sound like ? It sounds like a rattling coming from area. there also water coming in around the gimble... perhaps the bellows.

Wow, you've got alot going on here. Your rattle is probably the gimbal bearing, since you noted that there is water coming in around it. so yess the bellows will need to be addressed.

exhaust coupling behind the engine
which one - could you post some pics??

Re: bad coupler?

I had the bellows replaced before I put it up last fall. I replaced the gimble just before that. That's why I'm wondering about the coupler. The exhaust I 'm talking about is the one that connects through the transom plate at the bottom below the gimble.

well... I put it in the water a couple of days ago and nothing went right. It leaked. wouldn't shift ... so I decided it was time to take it to a pro. I'll pay someone else and be done with it.

Generally Speaking,..... No Gaskets should Ever be Reused........

Specifically Speaking,..... That O-Ring should Never be Reused........

well I took it to the so-called pro and could'nt make them understand what the problem is so I guess it's up to me..I'll pull the engine back out and get the gasket for the exhaust and do it myself. My only question concerns adjusting the shifting . Could I have messed up the shift cable when I re-installed the foot? It seemed to be hard to get it in neutral last time I had it out. It jumped from forward to reverse.

Here is a link to the online manual for the drive and transom shield. It doesn't sound to me like you have a clue to what you are doing.
When you click the link, scroll to the outline page at the end, then click on the LETTER of the section you want to view. The links are NOT marked.

One other note. EVERY oring, gasket, seal, or what ever you want to call them on the engine, drive, and transom shield have to be replaced. They are NOT a multi use item. ONE time only, then get a new one.
