We sold our big boat (well, 2/3 of it) to my friend. And him and I have been working hard on her lately getting ready for the season. Keep in mind this boat has been sitting for two years since it was in last, and it needed serious work then. Well when we determined everything else to be done could be done while wet, we decided to splash it. he had to go to school the next day so I skipped and spent all day with the last minute things. Put it in the water and fire up both 350 chevys. They run fine for 5 minutes, but Starboard barely pumping water out exhaust. Then she sounds rough, then out comes a bunch of grey oil out the valve cover vent! UUGHH  :( So we push it out of the launch and tie up alongside. Friend comes over and we fiddle with Port motor, only to hear nasty trans noise, like gears making some noise. My dad and I figure(and hope) that may be due to the engine actually running like crap, needs carb work and a new distributor, weve been highly reccomended to get the electronic pointless dist. Think a rough idle would make trans noise? ya know, constant slapping of the backlash in the gears. And as for the starboard side, that must either be a cracked block or head, eh? It sure filled up the crankcase quick! perhaps it could be a head gasket or something? Anyways, the boats just sitting there waiting for its bigger owner to get back from the guard, so the cops are haggling US a little. Can anyone top that? :p Craig

Re: Bad Day

well I talked to a friend that knows quite a bit, and he says the tranny noise will happen with a rough idle, and electronic dist. can be found in junkyard easy enough, and the crack often is under the intake, another plus! good news to sore ears!Craig

Re: Bad Day

Be sure not to use a car distributor. You NEED and MUST use a marine distributor. Good Luck!!! Let us know what ya find.

James

Re: Bad Day

Pulled the intake manifold off today, as well as both carbs and distributors. Went thru the carbs, got a lead on electronic dist.(he said about $100 apeice, not sure if its a whole or a conversion kit) AND... there wasnt a crack, but a freeze plug fell out of the bottom of the intake manifold!!! MUCH better then a crack! we are having one heck of a time getting the oil-water out of that engine, its too thick for those cheapy suckers to suck out. Whats wrong with automotive dist? Just the sparky worries, if so this is the last boat you need to worry about that on. ThanksCraig
