:: please forgive my ignorance but this is my first boat:: so last year i was given a free boat (free because the owner couldn't get it running and owed me some money) its a 1976 carina runabout (19ft fiberglass v-hull) produced in salt lake city utah, has a 2bbl 302 v-8 and a mercruser pre-alpha out-drive.

issues:

not running- fixed mis-wired solenoid and stuck carb

cooling- bad impeller

ugly- was a brownish-yellow then they covered up a bad patch job with what appears to be undercoating spray,(black) then for some reason they added silver
accents? and black(homemade) vinyl seats. (she gets damn hot)

stability- not sure what is required but i think there are some support structures missing ?

so at this point its running good , but not cooling on its own and it floats, but my wife wont go along with it being so ugly/hot. were family big (6 of us) on fishing and this would be our first boat to do it on.

question #1 i don't have the cash (or her support to spend it) on a new paint job, would it be conceivable to just spray maybe a white over the black? or should i just deal with it and hope he did as little prep as he did forethought on color?

question#2 because i like redundancy once the impeller is fixed/replaced i was thinking of adding a second cooling system with some kind of electric fluid pump and "T" it in the cooling system with like a brass valve, what kind or pump/ gpm would you recommend ? (im going to mainly be idling im not a speed guy.)

question#3 any suggestions ?

:welcome:to iboats Gratt!

With the impeller fixed and regular maintenance to the cooling system you shouldn't need the redundancy, save the money for a a paint job and new vinyl.

Can you describe your stability issues? Even at 19' with a closed bow, six people are going to be cramped in that boat not to mention with a V8 you may be pushing the overall capacity.

For now tell the Mrs. it's a rat rod boat and that makes it a cool accessory to her bikini. :watermelon:

i dont intend to have all 6 of us (one is 1yr old) but there are 6 seats, i am worried about trying something my wife wants to try, pulling a tube (slowly oldest is only 12) i just dont see much support and am not to familiar with the overall strength of fiberglass?

shes has no bikini lol:lol::lol:, but i cant get the ok to register it until its not black, :cold::mad-new:

I know from personal experience that if there's a woman w/o a bikini aboard no one will notice the boat. ;)

For the record - Number of seats doesn't translate into capacity.

With the younger ones described capacity is probably not your issue. Post some pics (option #3 is the best) of the structure in the engine bay/transome, we may notice something really off that needs addressed or just be able to find you a good mounting location for tow hooks.

To get it registered then - Scuff it and rattle can it gray, look at WOG's tractor paint, or just ask for forgiveness instead of permission.

first, a free boat is usually the worlds most expensive boats (because they need the most work).

the comment on the bad patch job and the support structures missing has me concerned. I would suggest reading this thread in its entirety http://forums.iboats.com/forum/boat...nature-deck-and-stringer-restoration?t=510077

its located in the sticky http://forums.iboats.com/forum/boat...r/295740-how-to-s-and-other-great-information

attempting to add redundancy by cobbling a system as described actually exponentially increases the chances of failure. the impeller on an Alpha drive pushes 20gpm at 20psi. that would be a big dang pump. simply fix the cooling system the way it was designed. pretty much most boats with I/O's have the same system (well over a billion boats). Impellers are a replace often before you need them type of thing. you should be pulling the drive every year for inspection of the gimbal bearings and bellows anyway.

I agree .... The black has got to go ..... But it does match the dog pretty well ... Better check the stringers and transom ... If they need replacing that will be a little costly ..

Here's the pictures it has been under that tarp for over six months now and short of New wiring that's how I got it. Almost everything works -just not the impeller- carpet is New but with the same effort as the paint job, and according to a buddy who knows boats my transom and stringers should be good. I have a small hydraulic leak at the pump, and some leaves from when the previous owner didn't cover it. Let me know what you think. Thank you all

that's a cool looking boat. Have you tried sanding the paint off, to see whats under neath? I would just ditch that rear seat. and find some replacements for the fronts on craigs list. In my opinion I kinda like the black. Just because its the same color as poo. Doesn't mean its a turd. Now if the deck squishes under your feet like Poo then you may just have a turd......

Tip off is a way of getting the paint to lay flat and smooth using the tip of a brush ...If ya google roll and tip there are many videos showing the technique ..

OK so after reading all of WOGs project thread with the Blue Flamingo, and some doe eyed discussions with my wife i have the go-ahead to bring this boat to being something i could be proud to own. i have done lots of searching and found several of these now rare boats. i found some that have been kept like fine wine and some have been so neglected mice wont live in them. i have lined up some good seats to replace the PO's make shift seats and even a sample of a paint scheme i really like (which will be tweaked to the seats color tie in nicely) all of which i will post, but please forgive my struggles to make them easy to see.

this is the paint scheme im going for but the seats are a algae/moss green so the trim color would also need to be for a proper look i think, how about you all?

will post more pics of my actual boat progress as soon as i can get them to post (to big)

here is a picture of the base paint job i found while sanding all that undercoating off, its much better than black but that's my opinion.
