Anybody else had a bad ebay experience? Just today I won an auction for a steering cable for $13.50 plus $4.95 for shipping. After the auction ended the guy sent an e-mail telling me not to send payment because I did not meet the $50 reserve. The auction did not have a reserve and his decription even said in bold capital letters "NO RESERVE". I tried to inform him that it did not have a reserve and that ebay would not have allowed me to win the auction unless I had meet the reserve price. He then tried to say that if I still wanted it I could send him a Paypal payment of $50 for the part and $25 for the shipping. The auction stated 4.95 for shipping. I let him know that I was willing to pay what I won the auction for and the 4.95 for shipping that the auction stated. He then said that he was unable to sell it for that price. After informing him that I was reporting it to ebay he offered to eat the cost of shipping if I was willing to pay the $50 for the part and he would throw in a bilge pump for free. I don't want nor need a bilge pump (who knows if it even works) all I want is what I won. This guys tries to tell me that he has a 100% positive feedback rating and is an A+ seller. He has only had 3 transactions and those appear to be things he bought not sold. After my negative feedback he will be down to 75%.

Sorry I just had to rant. And I hope this seller is not a member of this site. Would hate to know that people like that are on this site.

Yes, report him to Ebay. How many other people will he do this to? If he forgot or did not know how to do a reserve price, then he should take his lumps and move on. A learning experiance.

You can see that he tried to revise his decrition and say that he would not sell it for less than $50. If he realized that after he started the auction he hadn't set a reserve or started the bidding at the wrong amount he should have canceled the auction and relisted the item correctly. We have already reported this to ebay. if you do a search for bayliner capri steering you will see that he has already relisted this item.

My thoughts exactly. If you don't know what your doing then maybe you shouldn't be doing it. or maybe get that free software off the tv that shows how to buy and sell on ebay.

He could of made a honest mistake in his listing, same as you could have mistakenly bid 1395.00 dollars. is the value worth 50 would you keep the extra 5 at the check out counter the clerk hands you by mistake by undercharging you for an item?
this isnt a nigerian rip off.

I would neither give in to the demand or accept the product at this point. This is exactly the sort of person who has an item to sell that turns out to be complete junk.

Report him, let the sale go and move on.

He was too cheap to pay the reserve item fee and got caught. He has a low feedback and looks like a noobie...... he could have cancelled your bid and closed the auction.

Re: Bad ebay experiences

I just looked at the auction. He still has "No Reserve" prominently displayed, but added a comment in small font, indicating his minimum price. Whether he is just a noob who doesn't know any better, or is trying to get over on people, he needs to be reported to EBay.

Re: Bad ebay experiences

i was watching this auction. i was disappointed to think it sold for only 13 bucks, i could've afforded that but i was at work when it ended lol. i wanted the 5 cleats listed also, but someone kept outbidding. it was stupid, it sold for more than the other auction i wasnt even watching. oh well. ebay is frustrating sometimes.

I would have just let it go. There is a learning curve on Ebay and he seems to be just a bit slower on the curve than most!! I wouldn't leave negative feedback, It will take him forever to get it built back up!!

JMHO!!!!

Re: Bad ebay experiences

I did in fact leave negative feedback and I agree that there is a learning curve to ebay. But lets face it this is the real world. There are no "DO OVERS". I was actually going to try and work things out with this guy until he tried to not only raise the price of the part but also the shipping. My wife has a friend that actually teach's classes to people that want to get into selling on ebay and we had her look over the auction. She said that by him revising his description to say that the reserve is $50 means nothing. I actually got an e-mail from the guy today asking for me to revise the negative feedback. I may have to think about that but as of right now it is staying negative. Still waiting to hear back from ebay about this situation.

Re: Bad ebay experiences

Just a thought on your feedback - in reading it, I would not have known the circumstances of your unhappiness. You only say that he wouldn't sell because he "messed up."

If you change it, you might want to leave it as negative and say "Won bid, no reserve, seller demanded higher amount."

The only way I would remove the negative is if he ships the product to you at the bid price and original shipping price. Even then I would examine the product to make sure its in a usable condition, before revising.

As for cutting him slack, why? There are tens of thousands of people who sell stuff on EBay - the vast majority of them manage to do so while staying within the rules. I have seen many with thousands of sales and 100% feedback. I think this guy was just too lazy to learn the rules, before becoming a seller.

Re: Bad ebay experiences

i sold something on ebay once. I didnt charge enough for shipping. I still sold it, still shipped it. in the end I lost $2 and all my time on the sale, but i had committed to it, and took it as a lesson to me. Havent sold anything else since becuase i dont wanna deal with it. He should have said man, that sucks and sent it to you and try to find something else in his garage to sell and make the money he wanted then. just my $.02

Re: Bad ebay experiences

I sell a ton of stuff no reserve on ebay, and usually do pretty well. Guess what, sometimes the stuff sells for almost nothing, yet I still honor the whole no reserve principal.

We all need to report this tools auction to ebay.

Re: Bad ebay experiences

This guy is such a freaking tool. I was telling a buddy of mine about this earlier today. My buddy called me up a few minutes ago and told me asked the seller a question on his new auction about it being the same part that sold yesterday. This guys response to him was that the highest bidder didn't want it so he got stuck with it. What a liar. I don't even want this part from him anymore and I hope nobody bids on this auction for it and he really does get stuck with it.

Re: Bad ebay experiences

The seller either took a gamble by not paying for a reserve auction or just doesn't understand Ebay well enough. In any event, you have every right to complain. He should have sold you the part, took the loss, and chalked it up to experience. We've all had lessons that cost us money - he should be no exception.

Needs to be reported to e-bay. Same seller will most likely save the reserve fee and rip off many people if not "nipped in the bud" so to speak.
