After following this forum for weeks, I took the plunge and purchased a 1982 Renken, 18' 6", closed bow w/no engine or outdrive. Boat came on decent trailer. The boat had all instruments, radio, depth/fish finder, glass, new cover, etc. except for accelerator/tranny control. The hull is real solid, seemingly solid transom but rotted deck and stringers. My plans were to convert her to an open CC.

Starting about 6 weeks ago I started removing the instruments, wiring, steering wheel and cable then cutting out the entire deck, most of the bad stringers and the old foam. After about 2 weeks of grinding and cutting I developed a severe rash an my ankles, then w/in 2 more weeks the rash moved up my legs and arms. At about this same time I developed severe nasal congestion followed by excruitiating joint and muscle pain. While no definitive tests are complete the doc suggested I run (not walk) from any future fiberglass work. I tend to agree that a $350 project is not worth a lifetime medical problem.

If any interest in taking over this project I would like to get most of my money back. (The 40-50 labor to this point is free.).

Re: Bad (for me) Boat

I am sorry to hear about the health problems.

Were you wearing a tyveck suit and a respirator? These are ESSENTIAL to have when grinding fiberglass. Fiberglass will cause all sorts of skin irritations and is terrible for the lungs.

I hope you are feeling better soon.

An aluminum hull for your project sounds like a better idea. Sorry to hear about your troubles.
