Last fall I completely cleaned the fuel tank on my 1991 3.0L mercruiser. My mistake was not draining the fuel lines and carb. This spring I put a couple gallons of gas in it and tried to start it with out success (my starter died on me). I tried to get it up and going again a couple weeks ago after replacing the starter.

I had alot of rust in the lines and gunk in the carb. I went ahead and rebuilt the carb. I added 5 gallons of gas and tried to start it again. it ran poorly and died. Checking the filters I am now getting alot of what looks like wax in the filter that goes to the carb.

I unhooked the fuel line and cranked the engine and the gas is a light milkshake color and appears to have wax floating in it. I ended up running about a half a gallon into a container and it's finally clearing up.

Short of draining and refilling the gas tank and flushing the lines does anyone have any recomendations to clean up the old gas. Yes I do realize this was my fault. IMG-20120830-00076.jpgIMG-20120830-00075.jpg

Gas is clear now. Had about a gallon of gunky gas. Will take it for a run tonight and then check the filters again.
