Bad Fuel Pump?

I've chased an issue and I think I've arrived at a bad fuel pump. I was out recently testing the boat after I had recently redone the gimbal bearing/bellows/gaskets on the outdrive, and the boat sputtered out and died about 100 yards out of the marina. I tried to restart many times, the first time it fired up for a second, but after that, nothing but cranking. I thought maybe bad gas (the boat had sat for about 3 months now...I did a stabil treatment on the gas after last use)...had no other apparent issues.

I emptied out the fuel filter, gas didn't look great, but I think it would run on it. I replaced with a new fuel filter and tried to start the boat back up, but I noticed that I wasn't hearing the noise of the fuel pump priming when I put the key into standby. I pulled the fuel pump and am looking to test it. It is Mercruiser part number 861156-1. I hooked it up to my 12v jet ski battery, but it's not doing anything....it should be pumping, right?

IF your jet ski battery is charged, IF you are making a good connection to the pump from the battery and correct order (+/-), and the pump will not run, then the pump wiring pig tail is bad or the pump is

chartersj it's a 2000 7.4 mpi

Ok, so I made the connection. The wiring to the pump was actually cut before (there were butt connectors on each wire) so I cut it there and just used some wires to extend to the jet ski battery. The fuel pump makes a little popping sound kinda like a valve is popping open, and it gets pretty hot after only being connected for about 5-10 seconds. It definitely doesn't sound like its constantly running. Just the popping noise, then it starts heating up rapidly. Seems like it's bad, but I don't know what this thing is supposed to act like when it's in this situation.

It shouldn't be popping, so your probably right with your first thought and the pump is bad. It can heat up but should not happen that fast. Fuel can help cool it but not that much. Going to need 861156A1 and if you do a little searching you can find one for Airtex E11004

Yes, fuel pump was bad. Put new one on, and primed it a bunch while relieving pressure from fuel rail to fill it up. It started after a few tries and ran. Thanks!
