I have a 1999 searay 215 express cruiser with a 5.0 Mercruiser and a alpha 1 outdrive. I have noticed thst it is smoking now out of the prop where the exhaust is and uses excessive amounts of gas. The motor only has 210 hours on it and it has fresh plugs in it. I am running ethanol free gas in it nothing else. Could this have to do with the air/ fuel mixture on the carb. I had a problem with ethanol and switched to ethanol free gas. Please help. Note when I changed the plugs they were dark and the smoke has a smell of gas

First adjust your idle needles than anything else if you have it upen to much it will burn gas like a chu chu train at idle. lean it out all way then Work your way out until the motor idle normal and smoke stops coming out so much. Try don't assume the carb needs rebuild.

Normally once the needles are set...they STAY set. They usually don't back-out/advance themselves.

It's more than likely a bad needle seal...float/choke or contamination issue within the carb.

Back when I got this boat at 189 hours I was having problems with it starting and running. I took the top of the carb off and took the float out and the piece under the float that allows the gas in was all gummed up so I cleaned all of that up and changed the plugs. After that it ran fine until the ethanol problem. Then I put the ethanol buster in it and it was fine. Where are these needles located at ? When I had the carb apart it looked like there was some jets in the bottom bowl. Does it make a difference thst the air cleaner hasn't been changed When should I change the plugs again

I forgot to add that I also lost about 600-800 Rpms at wide open throttle and probably 5 mph. Is there a reason for thst and can the fuel affect that.

Loss of 500-700 Rpms and 5 mph at wide open throttle

I posted early saying my boat was smoking. I have a 1999 searay 215 express cruiser. It has a 5.0 mercruiser with an alpha 1 outdrive Not only has it been eating way more gas and has been smoking but I lost between 500-700 Rpms and 5 mph at wide open throttle. Could the air/fuel mixture being wrong make it do this and does my carb need to be rebuilt. What could make it do this

Ayuh,.... To Spec.... Edlebrock has an excellent manual on that carb at their website,...

The Merc/ Weber is the same carb as the Edlebrock Performer...

Mainly then if you have that issue of loss power the it means you going to have take it apart everything clean it up good. All the wholes were fuel pass. that's el chipo way. to check never now. also take look the accelerator pump you might not be getting all the pump out the carb not letting you get up their to your max out put. If all same just rebuild the thing.

And be sure and clean the breather. If it can't breathe it can't run.

Does it make a difference thst the air cleaner hasn't been changed

Boats don't have an air cleaner to replace. They have a spark arrester that is not usually a replacement item. But they do need to be cleaned. I use carb cleaner and compressed air to clean mine. Get all the oil residue off as well as any collected debris so that you can look through the elements easily.

that's the needle and seat that was gummed up, At 189 hours when that happened the carb should have been cleaned and rebuilt.
