A buddy of mine brought his pontoon over to see if I could get it running.<br />It's a 98 50 rude.It sat for Two years with 1/2 a tank of gas.I thought I might get away with topping off the tank and adding some additive,--that didn't work so i took the carbs apart and cleaned them(pretty bad,I had to twist the float needles with a pair of pliers to get them loose)The CARBS are clean. The motor still wont idle and only runs about 10mph.You can keep it running by playing with the choke. My next thought was to replace the fuel pump.I'll try running another tank of gas on it first.Anyway--I don't know if I'm asking anything or just sharing one of the latest projects. As always appreciate any comments. :)

Re: Bad gas?

Replace the sparkplugs, and REBUILD the carbs instead of just clean, cause the jets and orifices and passages are probably just as fouled as the needles. There are places inside the carbs you can't see, and a good soaking in carb cleaner overnight along with blowing them out will do wonders. I'm in the same process myself. If I'm correct having to choke it means it's running lean. And trying to run it on 2 year old gas is like someone giving you a can of beer that's been sitting out in the hot sun for a week, open of course.

Re: Bad gas?

There is a brass nozzle that extends down into the float bowl. Inside that nozzle is another small brass tube. You need about a .010 to .015 stiff wire to clean that small inner tube. Soaking won't always clear that tube, make sure you remove both the high, and low speed jets, and clean with a wire if needed. My bet is! you still have a clogged idle tube, plus a clogged high speed jet. Sqeezing the primer bulb, and making it run would rule out a fuel pump problem. If you had to remove the inlet needles with a pliers, those high speed jets are probably clogged solid, along with the idle tube pick-up. Let us know what you find.

I went through the carbs with a fine tooth comp, all jets are clean.Idle tube and all are clean as new.I didn't see any kind of filter, but I would think there's one somewhere or a screen. The thing is oil injected,so it's a mass of hoses and doomajigers. It wouldn't stay running at all before I cleaned the carbs, and stays running at 1/2 throttle up now,but has no power.

Re: Bad gas?

Do you have a built in gas tank with an anti-siphon valve? If that valve hangs up, it will give you a fuel restriction. Did you check compression, and ignition. Have you tried running it with fresh fuel, and a portable 6 gal. tank?
