1990 evinrude 140(recently discovered as 140 thanks forum!)
It'll idle fine in N,F, and R if I've just started it or else very slowly came down from WOT and eased into idle and idled let's say in F for a while but if I do something like slow down and pull into the fuel dock immediately with no time between, the moment it hits N on it's way to R or gets to slowest F idle it'll die. Primer bulb goes loose after WOT and I've replaced it and replaced the fitting on the tank and the fitting on the tank side of the fuel line and checked the tank vent and verified pressure in the hose and my fuel filter is clean. no change but Worst case scenario there I now have a full complement of spares onboard. This hasn't been more than a nuissance so far thank god..
It also doesn't miss or stutter or gasp or anything, it's running smooth at 1200 or so then I take it down to idle BAM it dies when the level hits forward idle. Starts right back up and may or may not be good to go after that. My idle speed is set at about 800rpm. After a few tries it's unclear whether re-priming the bulb helps. It has new coils, plug wires, and powerpack to coil wires.
I do have carb rebuild kits waiting to go in when I have the time hopefully this week but would like to go into this troubleshooting more systematically than just throwing a part at it and assuming it's 100% fixed if I idle in gear after WOT reliably again.
Can this be a fuel pump issue where it just isn't pulling enough fuel at low RPMs?
One more symptom- if I squeeze the primer hard'ish once it is already tight it loses it's fill.. I don't know if this was something that would happen before the idle thing started because I only recently came across that, never pumped past a little firm till that time and another time to confirm the finding.
