I have a bad kill circuit on my 1986 Johnson 140 V4. The boat was running and died suddenly on its own. Thanks to this forum I have narrowed down to the kill circuit. The black/yellow wire at the power pack is constantly grounded (runs when disconnected at the power pack).

I changed out the key switch and the neutral safety switch but no change. There is no emergency kill switch-- looks to be removed and wire cut at ignition switch many years ago by PO.

Does anyone know where to look for the source of the constant shorted ground?

You are going to have to use an ohm meter to check the wiring harness.
Attach one leed of the meter to the end of the of the black/yellow wire at the pack, and the other end to the engine block. Start disconnecting wiring harness until you loose the continuity of the black/yellow wire to ground.

I was hoping there is a common spot for the short circuit on these?

I found the problem. Remote wiring harness was rotted under the deck. Obvious shorts (melted insulation) and green corrosion in several spots. I need a new harness but they are obsolete.

You could try the top secret files at the begining of this forum and look for salvage yards.
