BAD pistons?

My motor has always run slugish since the day i got it (it was free) and i was going to do a complete rebuild to try and work out any kinks, and also because it probably needed it. When i pulled the pistons they looked like this (below) but the cylender looked fine. In you opininon would it be worth it to attempt to rebuild this engine or would it be in my best interest to get a new one?

Re: BAD pistons?

You don't go by what the cylinder looks like, go by what it measures. Judging from the picture I'd say you'll be repalcing the pistons anyway so the boring vs. only honing debate is a moot point. Pistons are the expensive part. The difference between honing only and boring isn't worth the trouble. Since you are going to buy pistons anyway, bore it.

What size motor is it? The newer pistons may be a 2 ring deal anyway.

Re: BAD pistons?

its a 1976 5hp evinrude. The Cylinders dont have the big gouges in them like the sides of the pistons. Would it be worth the trouble of getting all these new parts and trying to fix it or should i start looking for a new used motor?

You're going to spend _at least_ $300 by the time you get done with pistons, rings, gaskets and a re-bore (you need one whether it looks like it or not). If it were me, I'd be looking for a used model in the same year range and keeping what you have for spare parts. I think you'll come out ahead in the long run.
