could a bad rectifier cause my outboard to run very poor, almost like it is not running on all 3 cylinders? i did some wiring when i lost my key, and now it barely starts, and when it does I am at WOT and the motor is spitting and sputtering.

Yes, a bad rectifier CAN cause ignition problems.

One of the diagnostic tests for the Merc ignition is to disconnect and tape off the two yellow wires from the stator to the rectifier.

If the motor then runs fine, replace the rectifier.

so if i take the 2 yellow wires at the top off, and tape them up individually, it should run? or do i tape them together? just want to be sure before i walk out and do it. I will try this and have an answer back in 2 minutes

What's more likely is that when you hotwired it, you have a leak to ground on the kill wire, or worse yet you powered it and are killing your electronics.

Ah ha! I missed the part about losing the key and 're-wiring'.

These ignitions used the black wire with the small yellow stripe as the engine KILL, the ignition switch GROUNDS this wire to kill the spark.

Putting ANY power TO this wire will damage the ignition module.

If you haven't already, get a NEW ignition switch, take the old one with you to be sure you get the right one.

If this does not correct everything then test spark on each cyl, chances are you may need to replace the ignition module, however, test the triggers and stator following the detailed steps found in the FREE downloadable Ignition Troubleshooting Guide from CDIElectronics.com

Since there is NO RETURN on electrical parts so you want to be sure you test twice and order only once.
