Bad starter or cylinder problem?

I have a 1994 88 SPL. When I try to crank it over it will turn the first time but if it doesn't start that first time I have to wait a few minutes before I can get it to crank again. If I take the spark plugs out it cranks without a problem so I am not sure if I have a compression problem (too much) or if the starter is bad.

Any Ideas? I did have the battery load tested and it is fine.

Check all the connections from the battery to the motor, solenoid and starter. maker sure they are clean and tight. could be a starter issue, the only proper way is to do a draw test on it while trying to start it.

Re: Bad starter or cylinder problem?

Thanks for the reply. I did check and clean all the connections and make sure they are nice and tight. I am sure I don't have the tools to do a draw test but it sounds like a pretty simple test I can have done by a mechanic.

I am also in the process of trying to change the thermostats because the starboard side cylinders are running hot. After pulling the valve cover off that side like the manual indicates, I have discovered that the thermostats are actually between the cylinders down low. It appears that I have to take the lower case off to get to the bolts but I can't see where or how the case is removed.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Also make sure your battery is up to par....charge it good and then have it load tested at a auto parts store its free....even if the battery is new have it done....see the discharge rate under load....

Re: Bad starter or cylinder problem?

Thanks,

I had the battery load tested first because I thought that may have been the problem the way it was cranking but it tested great.
