Bad Starter?

Not a newbie here but couldn't get in under old name.

I have a new-to-me 1993 Mercury 25HP with electric start. Bought it sight unseen and may be getting what I deserved.

The starter seems to be weak - turning over engine once or twice only ( I hear a tone from the solenoid or something). Pull the plugs (reducing load) and it spins constant although seemingly slow. I assumed it was the battery or cables but it didn't help. Jumping with a car failed too.

Per a search here - I jumped directly from a car to the engine ground and starter wire. Same thing.

Does this tell me I need a new starter? Are there any ohm or similar checks to verify?

Thanks for the help - I'm flying blind without manual or parts book.

pull it and take it to an alternator/starter shop. they can test it, and rebuild usually much cheaper than a new one.

If you jumped directly from a known good battery directly to the starter and it still doesn't spin freely you need some starter work. I also agree on your local starter/alternator/generator rebuilder. The can fix it.

If starter checks good, then clean and inspect all connections and main ground.

We are assuming that the engine is GOOD, is it?

Does this motor also have a pull rope? Try it, does the motor turn freely?

If not you could have more serious problems. I hope not.

Reporting back:

Pulled the starter off. Immediately noticed the homemade wire was probably a third the gauge it should have been.

In looking at the starter, I couldn't wait to go to the local auto electric shop. I took it apart and found the commutator was quite dirty and slightly pitted. One of the two brushes was nearly worn out.

The local shop did not have brushes that would fit. So I cleaned everything up (sanded with 400 grit first) and reinstalled with a heavy gauge wire.

Works fine now. I will need to order the new endplate (comes with brushes) or just buy a new starter in the near future.
