I have a 93 Mercury Force outboard. Starter will spin it just wont engage into the flywheel. Could it possibly be battery is just low? And if it does the same on a fully charged battery, is the starter toast?

Appreciate any input....thanks

You might try a new good cranking battery rather than some old used up dead cell deep cycle battery.
If that's what you have.

How many volts do you show at the starter post before, and during cranking?

It could be a bad starter but the odds are against it. Have the battery load tested. Check all the cables. They must be clean and tight. Look for signs of corrosion at the base of the lugs. They can corrode inside where you can see it and cause that problem. Does the bendix ride up and down on the starter shaft smoothly? If not clean the shaft and lightly lube it.

I hope it aint bad...i actually have a Red Top gell cell battery so i dont believe it that..(Yepblaze). Aint had a problem out of it all summer. Drove it all day dropped a buddy off at the dock, and that was all she wrote. All connections are tight, no corrosion. I guess Ill check the bendix...(bhile).

Appreciate yalls advice

Have you tried lubing the bendix? My Classic 50 did the same thing. The starter would spin and sound funny but no engagement. It sat for two years on its side in a barn so I sprayed a little WD-40 on the bendix and exercised it up and down a few times and it been fine since. Its worth a try.

If the starter turns out to be bad you can save money by having it rebuilt at your local auto electric shop.

well tried it out and the same thing happened. Bendix does not move freeley at all. Tried to move it up and down by hand but it will not move upward it stays depressed below the flywheel. Any more advice?

You left out "could be either, but writer is in left field."

Stator has to do with battery not charging. Starter not engaging is the starter, particularly the bendix.

It sounds like it got rusted onto the shaft. Happens all the time. Get it free with penetrant and a LITTLE friendly tapping, then lube it up with 10 W oil like the manual says.

hope it helps

I dont believe it got rusted do to the fact that ive had it runnin all summer. i was actually on the water all day long the day it happened. Turned the motor off for 5 min and then it wouldnt engage anymore. Like you said i tapped on it a bit ive oiled it also. Its like its locked in that position but it will still spin....(jmartin)
