Bad stator and control module? Motor smoked.

I'm currently trying to get my newly purchased 1990 225hp Johnson running, and ran into a snag today. My mechanic glued the magnets back on the flywheel, and installed it today. We tried to run the motor and quickly heard a pop and a bunch of smoke bellowing out of the motor. He immediately said it was the power pack. Once he took it out you could see a bit of melted plastic on it. He also said the stator looked like it was repaired at one time as you can see tons of epoxy all over it. He seems to think the previously repaired stator was not done correctly, which caused the power pack to fail. Does this seem to make sense? I'm worried if I replace everything the same thing will just happen again. Let me know if you need any more information.

BTW, before we tried to run the motor we had good spark on all 6 cylinders with a brand new battery. Compression was solid too, if that makes a difference. Could something be wired wrong, or would that have caused a problem when checking for spark? The boat/motor is new to me. Thanks in advance for the help guys! I trust my machanic, just have a bad feeling we're missing something for some reason.

The first thing your mechanic should do is get his peak reading volt meter and OEM service manual out and go through all the output checks of the componets to prove exactly which one is bad. You could also have a bad reg/rectifier but can't tell that without getting it to run.

sounds like your mechanic does not know too much..I am just a back yard do it yourselfer but I could tell you in about 10 mins for sure if your power pack was bad or your stator or your rectifier..or if it is just a coil....you need a new mechanic who knows how to diagnose a outboard instead of just guessing...by the way when you see melted looking stuff dripping from the stator your rectifier/regulator is probably bad and may or may not have burned up you stator..it is probably not a messy epoxy repair attempt..
