I have a 1987 3 cyl. Mariner 90 HP outboard. Lately it has been pushing the boat about half speed until it warms up and then suddenly kicks into full power for the rest of my outing.
After reading many entries on the forum and running some tests I think the problem may be my switch box. But, I thought I should get some expert input before shelling out $200 for a new one.
All measurements were made with the motor off and cold with the battery disconnected. This is because the problem occurs when the motor is cold.
All three coils measure 0.0 ohms across the input and 936 to 959 ohms from the high voltage side to ground.
The switch box measures 9.11 to 9.59 meg. ohms input to output but 4.25 to 4.69 meg. ohms output to input(There must be a diode junction in there). Two cylinders measure 5.00 and 5.02 meg. ohms to ground but the third measures 3.93 meg. ohms. (I?m thinking this is a problem)
The trigger measures 15400 to 15500 ohms from each trigger output to ground and 2547 to 2558 ohms between trigger outputs.
Is this enough to draw a conclusion? I'm thinking I may have more than one problem but the switch box is one of them. Is this the right conclusion?
