Bad Tach and Transducer Possibly

2 quick questions, i posted in the yamaha section about my tach before seeing the electronics section. My 1987 yamaha 115 tach pings out at 7000rpm when turned over and never fluctuates. Im thinking a grounding issue but all the wires seem to be hooked up just fine with no cuts or anything. Not sure if the tach has just gone bad. Seemed to work fine last year. Also my fishfinder is a basic eagle that works for seeing the bottom contours mostly. The only problem i have is that once we start to pickup a little speed the depth reads 200 to 500 plus feet or just goes blank with a zero. Fish start to ping everywhere. I figured that the transducer was mounted to low so i raised it a little. It is mounted halfway between the motor and the side of the boat, more than 1 foot away and pretty much level with the bottom of the hull. Not sure if being a cheaper unit it just doesnt perform at speed or if i have it mounted incorrectly. I have remounted it twice with the same results each time. Any advice would be great.

Re: Bad Tach and Transducer Possibly

I had that with my lowrance 320 gps. At speed, it blew out and read zero, or 60 ft. Also didnt work well in weeds, and caused me nothing but grief. Make sure you start it in position "A", and try to get it as level as possible with the bottom of the boat. You may have it too close to the motor, and the turbulence is causing the issue. Your transducer may be blown as well.
