Bad tach or what?

Hi, guys. Since this is my first post, let me say I think is a great forum! I'm amazed at all the knowledge you guys have and share.
I recently bought a '79 Norris Craft with a '79 Evinrude 100 (100999S). Haven't had it in the water yet (wanted to try to make sure everything was good-to-go first) but I'm working toward that soon.
It has never had a tachometer so I installed a new Teleflex this weekend. When I installed one once on another boat, I thought it was a pretty simple job.
My problem is this: the tach only works while the motor is spinning up to start. Once the engine is running, the needle falls back to 0. - Fast idle, slow idle has no effect. Selector is set on 6P.
So far I've checked DC voltage on the sensor wire (gray) and the ignition (purple) and both seem fine. Consistent ground on the black wire too. Also checked for loose connections on the engine terminal strip and looked for possible short circuits - couldn't find anything to fix.
Any ideas what to check next?

Hmm.. I just found Joe Reeves' Tach Test here. I had done searches but I guess it's all in how you word them. Will try it tomorrow and see if I've got a bad rectifier.

Re: Bad tach or what?

Thanks to Joe Reeves' testing instructions, I did some checking today and I'm convinced the rectifier is bad. Of course this means, in addition to a non-working tach, there is no charging output for the battery. Got a rectifier on order. Hopefully that will cure it.

make sure the tach is set to the right pulse also....like a 12 pole is 6 pulses and 10 is 5 pulses....

also make sure u disconnect the battery cables when doing the rectifier..or u may blow the new one....
