Bad water pump?

Suzuki DF140, 2006 (4 stroke). Today on the water the engine made a rythmic clucking (cluck cluck cluck...), probably about 2-3/sec at idle, it sped up with the engine. Made the noise in whether or in gerar or not.

I pulled the boat out of the water ASAP. I immediately thought impeller, as it is overdue for changing (I had ordered a new one and was going to get it in soon, I promise).

Taking off the water pump, i got this:

The impeller looked pretty good, no cracks and nice and flexible

I'm putting in the new impeller, but I no longer think this is the problem. Does the pump usually come apart like this? Could this have been the problem? The gasket looks pretty nasty too. The boat is 100 miles away and I would like to have all the parts I need next time I go up.

Thanks

Re: Bad water pump?

Hi Campylobacter,

I'm wondering if we both perform the same job (Biomedical Scientist?).

I am certainly not an expert on outboards, but changed the impeller on a Suzuki DF25 this week. The image of the old impeller looks to me like it is past its best and in need of replacement.

However, I'm unclear if this would give rise to the clucking noise you describe.

When you replaced the impeller, did this improve things?

Yea, I'm a microbiologist (academic)

The gaskets and such were in such bad shape, I ordered a whole rebuild kit. While the boat was out of the water (Its usually slipped), I replaced the gear oil. It sounds better on the muffs, but I haven't had it on the water yet.
