I've posted before and I'm still having problems. My engine had run in January. It sat 2 weeks and would not run. I changed the coil & power pack (both bad), the 2 spark plugs, the gas/oil completely, the spark plug wires, and added a water seperator. The best I can get is a backfire and smoke out the exhaust when I crank it over. It is only a 2 cylinder and the plug wires are installed correctly as well as the wires to the coil. The #1 piston is in the correct position with the timing marks on the flywheel. When I installed the power pack the terminals on the wires would only fit back the way they were removed, except the 2 wires that sit under the power pack when it is installed. These 2 wires look like they are color coded the same so I figured they connect to either wire. Could this be my problem. I've tried reversing the 2 plug wires to see if that cured the problem and it didn't. The flywheel key is not sheared either and the nut is torqued correctly. The fuel system appears to functioning correctly. I believe it's an ignition problem. Any ideas? Thanks for all your help!

A loud backfire from the exhaust says that at least one cylinder is firing with the exhaust ports open.

Try switching those two wires the seemed to have the same color code.

Is this an electric start model?
I had a grounding problem on a 25 evinrude. It smoked the stator & coils nearly every time I tred to crank it. Turned out the ground cable for the starter was attached to a stud from the factory that was corroded in the block. Therefore the starter was grounding back thru the ignition system. After changing the ground to a bolt that didn't hold a water jacket cover on, the problem was eliminated. Hope this helps. (Did you check your compression?)

When you changed out the gas/oil mix and the water seperator, did you look at the liquid? If it had water in it,it won't run right until you rebuild the carbs.

Re: baffled/ 1989 Evinrude 48 spl

bump:
I checked out the 2 wires under the power pack that I thought were the same were differently color coded. I found that I do have them hooked up correctly, but there was a nick out of the insulation of the solid green one going to another coil (rectifier or the other one). I fixed that and now it still backfires once in awhile, but still mostly cranks without firing. I did go through the carbs before because one had the inlet pin corroded to where no gas came in. When I cleaned up the carbs everything seemed good. Any other ideas? All help appreciated!
