I just fixed the pump on what i think is my bait well. When i turn on the pump it sprays water into the tank and drains out the bottom down a hose and out of the boat.My question, is this how it should work or should it hold water or is it just used to keep the bait fresh and wet?
thank for any info

Re: bait well

There Should be a Standpipe sticking in the drain to hold a reasonable Level of Water.......

It should have a pipe that stands in the drain hole, cut to the hight you want the water. Usually fitted with a rubber boot on the bottom of the pipe so it can be removed from the drain hole and a screen on the top to keep your bait from flowing into the tube.

Well I see bondo beat me to it. I guess he was posting while I was looking for a picture of one.

Re: bait well

Either a standpipe or a plug goes into the hole. Check the baitwell near the top (either side) for an overflow that drains excess water overboard. If there is an overblow, you insert a plug in the bottom. Pull the plug to drain the bait well. And what you think is a baitwell may actually be a livewell in which you keep your catch. What kind of boat are we talking about here??

I have a17 foot Spectrum. The well is only about 18 bye12 inches and about 10 inches deep. There is no drain hole in the side of the well.By the sounds of it it looks like im missing a standpipe, makes sence.Would about 5 inches be deep enuff?
Thanks to all

Re: bait well

If the well is 10 inches deep you need a standpipe about 6 - 8 inches high. The pipe typically has a rubber adapter on the end that pushes into the hole to form a seal. You may need to make something that works. My suggestion would be to try 1/2-inch pvc pipe. If it fits loosely in the hole, grease the inside of the hole, clean the end of the pipe and apply a liberal amount of clear silicone sealer. Stick it in the hole and let it set up. When the silicone cures it will stick to the pipe but not the bait well. You now have a leak-free standpipe. Might help to add a rubber "O-ring" at the junction of the pipe and bottom of the bait well.

Re: bait well

Puddle jumper, my 19' Spectrum had a live well that I would think is similar to yours. It was a bit bigger and the passenger seat was mounted on top of it. It had an outlet on the side of the well close to the bottom and a piece of plastic pipe with a 90 degree elbow fit snuggly in that fitting. For use you pivot the pipe so it stands up right and to drain pivot the pipe so it is parallel to the bottom of the well. Hope that helps..

Re: bait well

Back to the plug or stand pipe that the others posted about then! None of it is brain surgery and you just want the stand pipe tall enough so when you fill the live well / bait well that the water can drain out of the pipe before it over flows the well. My well was low enough that it would partially fill with water when the boat was stopped but would empty on plane if the pipe was down. It was a great "porta potti" for the GF with auto flush!
