Re: Baja vs. Celebrity

Personally I would go with the Baja just for the fact it has a Merc and not the Volvo.

If they both had the Merc and the Celebrity was as clean as they say I would have actually went with it and this is coming from a Baja owner. lol

It boils down to what one YOU like the best. Whatever one you chose keep us posted.

I would definitely take the duoprop VP over an Alpha 1 any day, not even a comparison with regards to performance and handling. As others have said though, go look at both and buy the one you want.

Just going by the two ads, I'd prefer the Celebrity.

i'd go for the celebrity too.

mostly because of the drive. + the baja guy has the high 5 prop + a whale tale. that leads me to think he's having troubles getting on plane..

The Volvo is nice but watch out for rocks with the SS props.

Re: Baja vs. Celebrity

My last boat was a 1996 180 Islander with the same engine/drive. I ran a 3 blade SS Mirage and it had no problem pulling a couple skiiers out. I'm not sure why he has a 5 blade?...

The Volvo thing would scare me on the Celeb, as we don't have a VP dealer around my location. A friend has a Volvo powered boat and had to wait 6 business days to get a power steering hose shipped in.... waiting 6 days for a part means one less weekend boating. And thats something I don't want to do.

So IMO, I would say go BAJA! ;)

As for Baja still being around that remains to be seen. Baja was bought by Fountain about a year before Fountains house of financing cards fell down and they declared bankruptcy. Guess selling your company to a bank so that you can offer super good finance deals so you can sell lots of boats can come back to haunt you.

So there really is no telling what the future holds for Baja.

As to the two boats your looking at-

Celebrity
How long has it had a full tank of gas? is it stabilized?

One owner and in great shape is a good sign.

Baja
2 years older and $2,000 less

$2,000 will more then pay for some cosmetics

Probably built better.

No clue on prop and tail????

In Colorado, had a 1989 16' Bowrider Invader w/a Volvo Penta 4-cyl I/O engine and it ran good, but didn't have EFI or power steering. That alone made it kind of hard to start and pinion steering isn't fun to steer. But, for fishing in on local reserviors, it was fine. Sold it when we moved out of Colorado.
Now have a 1992 Celebrity 200 Cuddy w/a 5.7 I/O Mercruiser. This 8-cyl engine really kicks but (speed) compared to the Invader we had before. Unfortunately, again this boat doesn't have EFI, but does have power steering. As far as I know, Celebrity is no longer in business which is sort of funny because Invader was out of business when we bought that brand of boat. But, for us the Celebrity has been fine except for needing a new (reman) carb, but it still runs good.

I think Either boat would be a good buy. I dont think that the fact that Celebrity being being out of buisness makes a hill of beans difference. At that age any issue you will have, the manufacturer isnt going to help at all anyhow. As long as Volvo/Mercruiser are still kicking for parts, your going to be fine.

I also agree....if it was an OMC that would be a different story.
