Baked on wax....how do you remove it?

Well I waxed the boat over the weekend. My brother was helping and on some spots caked it on. Well the sun baked it on and I can't even remove it with a drill and buffer. Guys, it's baked on big time. It doesn't look too bad as my hull it white (thank God). The use of the buffer just seems to melt it down but you can still see the swirl marks from the applicator. Anyway, I used mother's carnauba formula for boats, cars, and aircraft. Any suggestions on how to remove it or should I just leave it as it is and hopefully it will wear off?

Won't acetone eat up the gel coat?

I second Acetone...<br />Acetone will evaporate faster then any affect will be done to gelcoat. It will take of your dry wax marks.

If you don't like acetone, use paint thinner from Lowe's, plus it won't evaporate as fast. :)

At my marina, they use "mineral spirits". I use acetone.

Acetone it is! Thanks for your help. I tried a little last night and it worked great. We used way too much wax on this boat. I'll need about 50 towels to get it all off. I should have read the directions that said "use sparingly and do not apply in direct sunlight". It is caked and baked!

Be careful with the acetone. Read the caution statements. If you do this in a closed area like garage, the fumes are very heavy and will fall to floor and build up. Could fill your boat with very flamable vapors even if done outdoors. Be wary and don't smoke.

Just use clear household ammonia. You may have to let it soak a bit, but it cuts wax like crazy. You will have to wax the boat again because you removed the protective coating.. Bob S
