Ballast resistor resistor wire?

I just purchased a pertronix ignitor and flamethrower coil. I have a 1983 470 mercruiser and need to remove the ballast resistor or resistor wire. My manual shows a purple resistor wire from the + side of the coil to the electric choke. Can this be right, and if so how do I bypass this correctly?

Thanks BC

That should be the one. That purple wire u mentioned would need to be replaced with a new copper wire of the same gauge, perferably purple. The choke gets 12v off the ignition switch.

That purple resistance wire gets power off that same circuit, from the choke to the coil.

Purple wires are generally +12V when the ignition switch is on. It would be a good idea to clearly label the new wire that it is not a resistance wire, so if someone in the future is working on it they will know. Keep that old 470 humming!:D

Re: Ballast resistor resistor wire?

just found a hiding resistor on my boat, and was wondering why under a load it was bogging out.. now i know...

to make sure you have 8+ volts at the + coil, ground the negative of the coil and then check the + to make sure you have the correct voltage, most resistors only work under a load... made me pull my hair out.... !!!!

Got her running yesterday. Starts like a champ, that's what I was looking for. Going out in the morning for some lake Erie walleye. Thanks to everyone.
