banging when put in gear

have a 50hp mercury which gives a few bangs when put in gear, sounds like there is something in the prop but there is not, it only happens for a few seconds then runs fine the rest of the day, any ideas ob what this could be.

Check the shift cable adjustment. It may be the cable has stretched and therefore does not allow full engagement so the clutch dogs jump a little until they finally latch up. It may be the idle speed is too high as well.

the engine goes into reverse np, but when put in forward it jumps and bangs for a minute or so until it settles down then is ok, i hpor this just needs adjusting ? or could it be the gear box is on its way out ???
