So I went down tto a distant relatives farm the other day to see what he had. He said he had some boats "layin" around. When I got down there, here is what I found:
1956 Evinrude Fisherman 5.5 hp
35HP johnson Super sea-horse
40Hp Johnson Super sea-horse
Both motors have working controls, etc.
I found an old Avalon boat in ok condition.

What would you guys do with these?
Keep them?
Part them out?
What is the demand for some of these motors?
I was also thinking about taking some of the lights, horns, etc, that are from the 50-80 era to sell. I hate for this stuff to just sit there.
He is kind of hesitant, but I think if I give him cash, he will give me whatever I want. The stuff is just sitting in the barns.

The motors appear from the outside to be in great shape. Just a lot of barn dust on them.

What to do!!?!?!?

Re: Barn finds

I'd keep the 5.5 Evinrude and use it, great little outboards. I love my '55 5.5hp Johnson as a kicker on my big boat and primary motor on my 12 footer.

The 35 and 40 I'd try to get running and either sue them or sell them. Are they electric-shift? If they are they aren't notoriously great but could be parted out.

That old fiberglass rig probably isn't worth a whole lot unless you put lots of work into it.

Re: Barn finds

I would go thru the Johnson ,replace all the fuel lines, rebuild or get a new fuelpump,I wouldnt try starting it before doing so.Id be willing to bet the coils are bad ,because, age alone can kill the insulation. For a couple hundred bucks you can put the Johnson on the boat.Clean it up nice and see what you can get. There are many lovers of old boats.Lok online for the classic clubs out there.I would also do the same with the evinrude. As for the small rng.Go thru the fuel system too,get it running and hold on to it .They are gret little powerplants for canoes and rubber boats.Check the gas tank on the 5.5 for rust.if there is any ,remove the tank and valves etc.Fill it,put some course sand and water in it ,while looking at the scenery swish it around for a good while.Flush it out good with soap and water, then get some oil and gas mix and get a coat on the polished metal. Those engines run on 24-1.A quart of oil ,not a pint as the newer engines use.You need to change the water impellrs too. They dry put and "take shape"of their last position as they sat, they wont come around, definatly need replacing. They all have coils, points and condensers ,you would be doing yourself a big favor replacing thiose components. But,before you do anything costing $$$ .Make sure they arent frozen and in fact blown up.Maybe they are junk??take the plugs out and get some fogging oil for storing outboards, put a couple good blasts into the cylinders and turn the flywheel slowly .You may find some resistance, which could also be from the impeller.Once you feel the engine rotates OK,do a compression test on them.Let us know how you progress goes
