I want to clean my own boat. What is the best way to completely remove barnacles? I tried scraping them and was left with the hard white husks left on my hull. How can I remove those husks? Is there a chemical or best tool to use? Any info greatly appreciated.

Re: barnacle removal

we use to pressure wash the heck out of it , as soon as it came out of the water. if they have dried, you may end up sanding and bottom painting.

If it was bottom painted, he wouldn't have a barnacle problem.
Anyway, stupid neighbor of mine left her boat in for 2 months without using it. No bottom paint. Barn's inch thick. Super powerwashed it, but to get rid of the "husks", for lack of a better word requires flipping it over and get out the sander....only way. Or just live with it....like TD says.."if they have dried, you may end up sanding and bottom painting."...only I'd remove the "may" from the statement

Depends on how old it is , Scaaty. I've seen older boats with bottom paint (so old that it had lost its effectiveness) covered with all kinds of junk.

It was a banner year here for barnacles

many brand new boats had to get short hauls in august to clean the bottom and drive :(

Reading the his post tells me it has no bottom paint, but of course, some posters never give the little details
