OMC cobra 1988 5.0. This engine and outdrive has served me well over the past twenty or so seasons. With proper care the outdrive and drive train in my opinion was one of the best. My question is though, even with the attention we gave our boat, how can we prevent the buildup of barnacles and whatever grows in places that are inaccessible between the outdrive and the transom bracket assembly? Some growths last season were large enough to puncture the boot covering the drive shaft. Of course saltwater penetration warranted replacing the universals and gimbal bearing. The boat is in a slip on Long Island NY from May 15 to Oct. There was even a mid season cleaning. The areas of buildup are only visible when the outdrive is removed. I can not be the only boater experiencing this problem. Is there any suggestions from boaters on how to combat this issue. Thank you in advance for any remedies. Neil.

Re: barnacles

Down here folks with boats stored on the water sometimes use lifts to get the hull out of the water. Some are mounted to a cover (roof over the slip) pole mounted into the ground and others are buoyant air tanks that you adjust the air for the position of the lift you desire.
