Basic Oil/Gas Mixture question

Im a complete newbie to the boating scene, and I'm going to be heading out for the first time this Sunday.

My boat has a 100hp Mercury 1000... it looks almost exactly like this one:

1961.gif

Which would make it a 1960's engine, unless they kept that same style into the '70s or beyond.

My question is: what is the oil/gas mixture ratio? I have a 5 gallon tank and am wondering how much oil to put in.

Also: any specific recommendations for the type to use? Or would any two stroke oil do?

Thanks in advance for any enlightenment you can offer!

** Edit: here is a pic of the engine and boat:
Re: Basic Oil/Gas Mixture question

Hi Mikeinsac,
Thats a good looking rig. Use a 50 to 1 oil ratio. Thats 3 ounces of oil to a gallon of gas. This mixture will be just a little rich in oil, but most folks would rather be rich in oil than lean. It's much easier to figure 3 onces per gallon than 2. something onces when mixing. Use a quality 2 stroke oil with a TCW-3 rateing.
Hope this helps and have fun.

Hey Mike,
I've seen that boat before! Looks like you've done a sierra hotel job of fixing it up. Get back to me/us and lettus know how it works. Looks like it'll flare your nostrils an' make your eyes water.

c/6

Hooty

Re: Basic Oil/Gas Mixture question

Thanks very much almost retired again, that's exactly how I'll measure it up. :)

Hooty! I haven't taken a picture of the boat since I got it "finished"... so this pic is the same from before.

All I've done is smooth out the floor of the hull where the old seats had been, build the bench seat structures, fiberglass poxy it all in place, and cleaned up the various marks on the exterior hull (making it more white).

I also bought a deep cycle battery and some life vests, as well as a wiring harness for my truck.

Here is the basic outline of the bench seat deal I made (image, 26kb):

It was a good exercise in construction for me (I'm normally just a computer geek!). I'll take some pictures tomorrow and post em over in the general boat forum... maybe in my first thread if I can find it. :)

I've towed the boat around in my S10 (2WD 4 banger) and it seemed to pull just fine. My only concern is at the launch... I've heard nightmare stories of trucks being unable to pull away from the launch when retrieving the boat! Should I be concerned with this in my case?

Thanks again for the great help and feedback!

You won't have any trouble retriving the boat unless it's a real steep ramp. The next thing you're gonna need real bad is bucket seats.Your a$$ doesn't have anything to hold on to on that bench.
Drop me a email and I'll send ya a picture of my ole rag. I just rebuilt the engine (busted crankshaft) and it's working pretty good.
jehart1@attbu.com

c/6

Hooty
