Can anyone provide me w/ a link or info with regards to the basic electrical wiring to an outboard? I'm trying to debug why transmitting on VHF would kill an etec 115 outboard?

Re: Basic Outboard Wiring

As mentioned before, start by measuring battery voltage as you key the mic. That represents a high current draw. If that draw drops the system voltage below the threshold for the ECM in the engine it can't run properly. the way to prove or disprove this, is to wire the radio temporarily to another battery If it still kills the engine its RF engergy radiating into the electrics that's the problem.

The service manual for your engine will contain the schematics. But you will find the ECU is just a big blob in the diagram and it will be meaningless from a troubleshooting standpoint.

How close is the antenna to the motor and are you talking about a common VHF marine radio?

Standard VHF. The antenna base is by the helm station.

I went to evinrude's website and did look at the manual for an 115. No wiring diagram. I'll look again.

Check where the VHF is getting the power. If the system is coming directly from the ign. switch, keying the mic may be somehow closing off the ign. circuit. Just a thought...
