While building my sons basketball goal last night, I realized I had put the poles together wrong. I have the top section turned 90 degrees of where it should be, so the holes are wrong and I can't get them apart. The poles slide together and the instructions said to use a block of wood and beat them together and boy did I ever! I tried attaching one of the steel brackets onto the pole and beating it back off, but I can't even move it. Any ideas?

Re: basketball goal

You might try heating the outer pipe, it should expand and loosen it's death grip on the inner pipe.

I tried heating it with a hair drier, but it didn't work. I don't want to use a torch a make the pole look like arse! I know I could just drill new holes, but was hoping somebody might have a suggestion to get them apart, that I didn't think of. Maybe a real heat gun could could get it hot enough to actually do some good!

Yea, you'd probably need alot more heat than a hair dryer.

Re: basketball goal

did you try spraying a good penetrating oil (not WD-40) into the joints? might be of limited help since no screw threads to run down, but perhaps worth a try.

Got access to dry ice? Wonder what dry ice applied to the inner piece while using two hairdryers on the outer piece might do (a hairdryer on high, focused on the same spot for awhile can get VERY hot. But if you have to rotate it around a pipe that large, might not do the trick. Maybe even regular ice packed around the inner pipe with two hairdryers on the outer pipe might do it?

Also, what are you using to twist the two pieces when you try to seperate? Seems like some rubber to protect the pipe with a couple of those 'chain' wrenches might make it alot easier.

Or drill new holes.

Re: basketball goal

how about a heat gun and some thin motor oil like 5w30 or even cooking oil. I imagines the oil would get in between the poles so you can turn them around.

Take it back and exchange it for a new one. Tell them the holes wont line up like the instructions show. :D
