This is my first post, I am in desperate need of some advice on a lot of topics. I have just inherited a badly taken care of 15.5 foot bass boat, it is aluminum hulled. I am planning to repaint the hull, and all the interior bare metal. there is existing pain, and severe scum lines on this hull, my question is what is the process that i would need to follow in order to repaint this hull, do I need to wash the hull to remove the scum line, and then use a paint remover, a primer, then anti fouling paint, and then a top coat? Also I i am removing all of the casting decks and any carpeted ply wood, this wood is rotting, what kind of plywood do I need to buy to replace this, and how do I glue my new carpet to this wood? While I am at it I plan to re wire most of the electrical, there seems to be endless useless wires exposed, I am guessing i should take these out and put only what I need in, i plan to put in a new circut breaker, switches to my bilge pump, nav lights, aireoator, also my gauges are not hooked up, how do I do this? about the only thing I am planning on keeping on this boat is the hull, and the engine, it has a supurb 40 hp suzuki with only 55 hrs on it, the thing fly's for such a small boat, i have reached speeds of 37-40 mph on the deleware river. I am a Merchant Marine in training at Maritime college so I am knowlegeable about most Marine terminology, please help me out in any way you can. I understand this is a big job, but I am up to the task, anything worth doing is worth doing right!

Al52bert,

Welcome to the boards!

If you do a search at the top of the screen, you can find large amounts of topics involving painting the hulls. In fact one was still going on last week if I remember right. In the search screen search on "painting Aluminum" .
This will bring you about 40 threads on your exact question.

Are you going to leave the boat in the water permanently? if not, and its going to live on a trailer, then you wont need the expense of anti-fouling paint.

Good Luck and Welcome Aboard!
Nav

Be aware that most anti-fouling paints contain copper. They are not compatible with aluminum.

Re: bass boat restoration

You don't want to use any kind of plywood except Marine plywood.I done this once trying to cut cost. It works for a while, but if you don't want to do it again for quite a while marine plywood is the way to go. I fiberglassed the top side.

I forget the website but if you check on this forum under the fuel guage problem I had a few days ago, you will find a link to teleflex on how to trouble shoot guages. It has a pretty good diagram that will probably help you wire them up.
Hope this helps

Re: bass boat restoration

Hi I am new to this as well and in process of redoing a fiberglass boat of the same size. Heres what I did I hope it helps. My deck I redid with a exterior grade plywood(has a epoxy like glue that is waterproof) for the cost of my boat and judgeing what was in there oriinally it was best way to go. Now what I did diffrent from the originall floor I sealed each peice and mated both sides and glassed all in place so the deck is fully protected on both sides. it is better than what was in there but not as good as marine. if you will be storing in water or out in the elements might want to go with the marine ply.
Also i have heard of people using this as a firstcoat on alumminum with good results. http://www.iboats.com/Pettit_Aluma_Protect_Aluminum_Epoxy_Primer_4400/dm/*******.857472484--**********.879420037--view_id.351207
just follow directons on the page.

good luck! I hope I helped!
