Bathroom remodeling... And Sheetrock gurus in the house?

I've been remodeling my first bathroom the past few weeks.

I'm at the point of hanging rock above the tub.
Should I put green-board around the tub and on the ceiling above it?

I plan on installing your typical plastic tub surround/insert so I don't think I'll need to put green-board behind that, however what about the ceiling?

When I built my second bathroom, I put green-board on the entire room. An expensive "overkill" I eventually learned.
I don't want to repeat that mistake!

Green-board in my area is approx. twice the cost of normal rock ('bout $11 board) :(

Thanks,

H.

Green board around the areas where water gets splashed is a good idea, also there is the steam vapors and any condensation to contend with.

Homerr, by using greenboard you'll never have to worry about it again. If you don't, every time you or anybody else uses that tub, you'll be thinking, "I should've used greenboard."

I vote yes to the green board around tub and ceiling. You can get away with regular drywall in rest of bathroom, but greenboard is a must in the tub/shower area. Moisture from slashes and steam will eventually rot regular drywall. If you have regular drywall there, a good coat paint will work wonders at keeping out the moisture, but any crack or hole in the paint can be a place where moisture gets behind and ruins regular gypsum.

Absolutely green board around the tub/shower stall at least. I even gave the stuff a coat of paint before I but the tub/shower unit in. Hey, I like overkill. :) :)

The guys I work with do the same Fly Rod

On very small bathrooms (5X7 - 8X10)they use all cement/backer board since there really is no part of the room that isn't effected by moisture.

My dad is a contractor and I've helped him on several jobs in the past. He won't do a bathroom unless it is green board all around. The bathroom is the most moisture prone area in your home and the humidity will eventually break down the cheap stuff, even in the areas that aren't directly by the water.

Put it this way. You can go green around the tub and standard around the rest of the room for a while and you'll be happy. However, eventually, the standard will be affected by the condensation. I'd rather pay a bit extra now and ensure I'm going to have something that is going to last for many years to come than go the cheap way out and have to do it all again down the road when material is more expensive, I'm old and too feeble to do the work or living on a meager retirement check and not be able to afford to have someone do it for me.

But that's just me. :) Quite the timely topic because I'm redoing my bathroom at the moment.

I did greenboard all around the tub and ceiling.
The vent fan is just outside the "waterline" above the tub, so I think the steam will vent rather quickly.

The previous rock job had the same thing done... greenboard around the vital area, and regular on the rest with a fan that was way too small for the job.
Surprisingly, the old rock stood up well. No rot that I could tell except around the floor where the occasional flooding occurred with the kids

It was the floor rot that prompted the remodel, and the fact we wanted the bathroom a bit bigger.
I hate patching things, and would rather start fresh so we ripped it all apart.

I just final sanded the rock, and it turned out well.. despite the fact I really hate sanding that stuff!

Thanks for all the help,

H.

just a thought here Homerr ...for the lack of a better phrase you might be 'pissin' in the wind' if you have upgraded to a highr CFM cieling fan with out allowing more air into the room itself.
How much of a gap between the bottom of the bathroom door and the finish floor?? If a half inch or less consider the fight against moisture futile. Not only does the air need exit the room it needs to enter as well making that gap between the door and floor VERY important ...

If that's the case - consider marking the door an inch to an inch and a half up off the finish floor and trimming to allow for more air movement into the room.

measuring up on both hinge and strike side of the door then connecting your two points will give you an even reveal between the floor and bottom of the door... use this method if the door is out of plumb or the floor is even slightly out of level in the opening....

for what its worth ...

You don't need it on the ceiling.

Just curious Ben Lurkin 'cause that's where you want the exaust fan unless you're under design constraints.
