Couldn't find anything in the forums about this... maybe everyone but me knows....

When you have a boat with a pull start outboard... how do you get power on the boat( for lights, stereo, etc.)? Is there a certain type of battery for this application? How would it get charged?

New to boating and haven't found the answer to this one yet.

(( I have a 1966 Glastron 15' with a 1960 18hp Evinrude Fastwin))

Re: Batteries and Pull start outboards.

You probably want a deep cycle battery. Most will say at least a group 27, but size really depends on the load you will put on it.

Light loads like a Depth finder, Marine radio, Gps and LED Navigation lights even a group 24 will work.

Heavy loads like a high amp Stereo and a trolling motor even 2 group 27 deep cycles will not be enough.

You charge them as soon as you get home with a automatic or smart charger of 10 amps or more. Better still a good on board charger with a bank for every battery of 10 amps.

Forget to charge as soon as you get home and they will not last very long at all.

If you use the boat infrequently, a solar trickle charger may help keep the battery up. If you use it daily with all the gadgets running and draining the battery, it probably won't keep it charged...
