I found a short in my battery cable (hot), goes to the alternator and starter), I have got the new cable $$. Now I’m stuck, because I don’t have a ½ in deep socket. I’ve cut the old cable apart in places…. silly me, Imp now in a jam. I’ve got plenty of wrenches but don’t have the room to use them. Could someone tell me if taking off the starter is going to be the trick? And am I capable of doing that? Hey, at least I found it! Is the starter going to fall into 15 pieces when I take it off…It looks like only two bolts holding it? Also a plastic thing with small wire attached, I’m going to have to remove that wire in order to lower the starter. It’s a 97 chev Silverado, 305, 2wheel drive, red. Thanks for any advice.

Re: Battery cable help

You shouldn't have any prob getting that starter off it is bolted up with 2 bolts and is in one piece
It won't fall apart when you take it down.
you could go to wal-mart and get you a socket to fit it. be sure to unhook the battery because it will be alive down in there

Re: Battery cable help

As bubbakat said, 2 9/16's bolts holds it on and the big wire that you cut, me thinks, is hot, but since you have cut it, it not hot now. :D

If you plan on doing work for yourself, get ya a good set of tools, snapon, craftsman, something good.

Good luck.

Re: Battery cable help

Went to Wallyworld twice yesterday, after school supplyz, thanks for the advs. Well the thing is I have 15,000 sockets, infact I was thinking it was a 1/2 in, turns out to be 9/16 that waz holdin the cable to starter. Had tools all the time, dangit. I have since got a jack, which have "all the time", jacked it up, which I should have done from the begining. Haveing a hard time getting starter squard up. I now have 5 hrs on this simple project wtf! Something tells me the gear must align perfect, lucky for me don't need the truck till tomorra night. I keep telling myself, u saved money by doing it yourself, I think? Steady as she goes. Plenty of ice tea. Plugs next.......wires at $117..hehe get a life...dealer! I'm that guy in that commercial, the airplane one, where the guy ripsoff the guys peanuts sitting next to him, Geico I think.
