battery case

Do you need to put your main battery in a battery case if it sits next to the engine on an I/O? When I bought my used boat, the battery was just sitting on the floor(no case). If I do need one, must it have a cover?

A battery case will contain any corrosive acid that makes it way out of the battery. With or without a case, the battery definitely wants to be strapped down. Often, the case (with the battery inside) is strapped down.

A second, and much more important reason in my opnion, for using battery boxes is that it give the lid something to set on. What you are trying to do is protect the terminals from having a conducting material fall down on them and short them out. As for the acid, well, I drill holes in the bottom of my boxes so they will drain. And acid spill, which I've never had happen, won't hurt the glass. You absolutly must strap the batterys down though.<br /><br />Thom

The last couple of years, It's been the CG's Favorite Ticket to write.......<br />Batteries Must be Secured(Strapped, or Bolted down),+ Covered with a Non-Conductive Covering......<br />Their 2nd Favorite Ticket is, The Fire Ext. Just Out of Reach of the Helm..........
