Battery charging question

I have a 20` proline sport with a DF150 Suzuki.
After reinstalling the battery, I forgot which terminal the yellow wire hooks to. I thought it was positive but I was getting a alarm signal and the dash gauges didn`t work, I put it on the negitive post and everything works fine but I noticed the dash volt meter was reading 14.5 volts at idle. A little throttle and it went up to just below 15 volts. I don.t remember it being that high before, it may have. I don`t know. Did I screw something up or is this normal engine charging voltage?

Thanks for any input

Re: Battery charging question

That's pretty normal for a battery that's down. Did you buy a new battery and just drop it in or did you put it on a charger and bring it up to full first.

Re: Battery charging question

The battery got drained somehow and I pulled it and put it on a 10 amp charge for a few hours and left it on a 2 amp charge overnight. Read 12.78 at installation.

Re: Battery charging question

your voltage is fine if its acurate ..you need 14.4v to charge it .If you go to max 15.3 thats fine but you may have to top it up with water as it will gas a little. I would check with a digital meter.

Re: Battery charging question

Thanks for the replys and yes I was using a dvm to confirm the voltage readings.
Edit.....Found it. Yellow goes to the negative post. The wire feeds the ground buss bar for accessories.

Thanks

Re: Battery charging question

Your charging is accurate. If you go out and run the boat for an hour or two, I'll bet that you'll see it drop down a bit.

Re: Battery charging question

your motors output is voltage regulated so it will rise to the voltage regulator set voltage. When its been at that for a couple of hours its fully charged and will only drop back if the loads exceed the output of your outboard system ..Good idea to check what your OB puts out current wise and see if your loads exceed that amount .
