Battery does not seem to be charging, checked with voltmeter 11.4 Volts, gage fluctuates between 10 and 11.7V, any suggestions on testing alternator. Battery is a brand new Optima Marine, so battery is good, starts fine, worried over time battery will drain, suggestion for diagnosing. TIA

Re: Battery Charging?

With the engine running (1000rpm or so), you should measure 14v at the battery. If you don 't have one get a simple multimeter from Radio Shack.

If you purchase/borrow a "Battery Tester" it will have a button to load test the battery, you can also use the button to test your alternator.

A lot of parts stores test the Alternator if you take it in.
Or a starter/ alt repair shop.

Its usually an easy removal - 2 bolts and a few wires.
Disconnect the battery if you are working on the alternator.
